About Us
The Kayu™ story began on a cruise ship
In 1991 Kayu™ Canada founder, Jim Labelle, was on a cruise ship vacation. You need to know that Jim was an experienced contractor and journeyman carpenter. While on deck, he knew he was standing on something that was not only luxurious, but would be able to handle the extreme conditions in Canada. This was his first introduction to the beauty of Red Balau Batu. Jim began to import the wood from Indonesia and Malaysia to use in his construction company.
Demand for these exotic hardwoods grew and four years later Kayu™ Canada was open for business, selling Red Balau Batu, Dark Red Meranti and Yellow Balau Batu.
Year after year Kayu™ Canada has grown bigger and better. What started out as a man and his dog has grown into a full family run operation. About our Wood
It was love at first sight. The look of the wood on that cruise ship was the first thing that caught Jim’s eye. Research led him to finding out more . The woods are extremely durable, with a lifespan of 30-40 years outdoors. They are flame and termite resistant, harder, scratch resistant, low maintenance and can resist moisture and temperature fluctuations from season to season. Tight grain patterns resist warping and severe checking. These exotic woods are priced comparable to cedar and composite plastics. Knot free, the woods provide a gorgeous surface that will last for decades.
